Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) with Teacher Certification
Pre-K12: (Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Intermedia)
Students wanting certification to teach pre-Kadult in West Virginia must complete competency requirements established by the state in addition to Division of Art and Design B.F.A. degree requirements. This unique program allows students to earn teacher certification while emphasizing a content area within the B.F.A. curriculum. Typically, the student’s schedule is reviewed with an area coordinator, and the art education coordinator.
This variation of the regular B.F.A. program begins after the completion of the freshman year and requires careful selection of both studio and academic courses. With the additional liberal studies and education course requirements, the anticipated time frame to complete this program is five years.
General Education Curriculum Requirements
These requirements are designed by the certifying agency of the state of West Virginia and WVU. Education requirements are maintained by the state. Undergraduate art students desiring certification should consult with the art education coordinator to be certain of compliance with certification criteria.
B.F.A. with Certification Curriculum
This variation of the regular B.F.A. program begins after the completion of the freshman year and requires careful selection of both studio and academic courses. With the additional GEC course requirements, four-and-one half to five years of school work should be anticipated. Students wishing certification to teach pre- K12 in West Virginia must complete competency requirements established by the state, in addition to Division of Art and Design B.F.A. degree requirements.
