J. Bernard Schultz

Professor | Art History

Dr. Bernie Schultz has his MA and Ph.D. in the history of art from the University of Pittsburgh and his BA from John Carroll University. He teaches courses in Italian Renaissance art and art theory, as well as survey of art history. He has served as Chair of the Division of Art (the former name of the School of Art & Design), Associate Dean of the College of Creative Arts, and most recently, Dean of the College. In 2011, he assumed the position of Director of Education and External Affairs for the WVU Art Museum.

Dr. Schultz is author of Art and Anatomy in Renaissance Italy and co-author of Art Past/Art Present, an acclaimed introductory art history textbook, recently published in its 6th, revised edition. Publications also include pedagogical Study Guides for Art History, and numerous articles and book reviews. In 1991, he curated an exhibition and co-authored a catalogue on faculty women artists at West Virginia University, and in 2004 co-authored the chapter, “Art Studies in America at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century” in Blanche Lazzell: The Life and Work of an American Modernist. In 1997 Bernie received the Neil S. Bucklew Award for Social Justice at West Virginia University. In 2006 he was honored with the Governor’s Award for Leadership in the Arts for the State of West Virginia, and in 2009 was named to the Commission on the Arts in West Virginia.
