Associate Professor | Graphic Design

Kofi Opoku received his MFA from West Virginia University and his BA from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. His specialties include web design and computer animation. His research focuses on ways in which technology may be used in a design context to create conversations around issues of public concern.

He began his design career as a graphic designer and animator, working in startup advertising agencies, production, and publishing houses. His interest in creative strategy and brand development subsequently led him to serve as an Art Director at Origin8 Saatchi, the Ghana affiliate of the global advertising firm Saatchi and Saatchi. Most recently, he completed a website project that catalogs the stories of homeless people in Morgantown, WV. His essay, “When Awareness is Not Enough: Understanding Homelessness Through the Lens of Design,” was published in Stephen Heller's Citizen Designer II: New Perspectives in Design Responsibility (Second Edition). His work has also been recognized by Graphic Design USA, Horizon Interactive Awards, and by the curated advertising website, adsoftheworld.com.
